Bernie Hickman

Bernie has undertaken a broad range of roles at L&G before becoming CEO of Legal
& General Insurance (LGI) at the end of 2016.
LGI has almost 8 million customers across both the UK and US who have life
insurance, critical illness and income protection policies which help to provide peace
of mind and much needed financial assistance, should tragedy strike.
LGI also owns or has strategic investments in a range of related fintech businesses,
helping them to scale up as they transform adjacent markets and utilising them to
drive more protection sales. These include Salary Finance, a workplace financial
wellbeing platform which is scaling fast in the UK and the US and two market leading
businesses in the UK mortgage market.
Over the last 20 years the best tech companies have delivered unprecedented levels
of business growth, not just by harnessing technology and data analytics, but also
through a culture of fast paced, customer centered innovation. Under Bernie’s
leadership, LGI has become a student of the best tech companies, analysing how
they deliver customer centered growth and adopting the best approaches in all areas
of LGI.
Bernie joined Legal & General in 1998 from Commercial Union (now Aviva). Between
2005 and 2010 he was MD of Retail Protection during which time he launched the
UK Protection digital platform, OLP Connect, creating the technology foundations for
sustained market leadership. He became MD of Individual Retirement in 2014 and
the CEO co-founder of Legal & General Home Finance in 2015 when he led the L&G
entry into the Lifetime mortgage market, achieving a 25% market share within 18
months of launching. He has also held the positions of Group Financial Controller,
Investor Relations Director and Solvency II Managing Director.
Bernie is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, is married to Nicola and has four
daughters.
