For the Rio Olympics, Visa and Barclaycard are working together to provide all 366 British athletes and the 150 support crew with wearable payments bands. The wrist-worn devices will allow Team GB to make tap-and-go contactless payments around Olympic sites.

The bands utilise Barclaycard’s secure bPay microchip and include an NFC-enabled antenna. The devices do not use a battery or need recharging.

“Wearable payments make life so much easier – fewer things to carry, fewer things to keep track of – which is why Visa is innovating in this area with our partners,” says Kevin Jenkins, Visa MD for the UK and Ireland.

“We are proud to work with Barclaycard in support of Team GB and hope that the band makes their life just that little bit easier with tap at the checkout.”

Visa, which is an Olympic sponsor, has installed 4,000 NFC-enabled point-of-sale (POS) terminals around the Olympic park to showcase cashless payments.
