Margrethe Vestager, the European commissioner for competition, is not slowing down and is now looking to create even stricter data rules.
She has spent the last five years becoming the scourge of tech titans like Google, Apple and Amazon and has issued some of the heaviest fines to face the tech sector to date. Vestager is now set to serve as the European Commission’s vice president and has taken charge of the EU’s digital policy.
And she has already flagged that she may want to make the EU’s data regulation even stricter.
Speaking at a conference in Copenhagen, Vestager said, “If we want to define the market, to set out what’s acceptable and what isn’t, then what we need is not more competition enforcement. We need regulation,” she told a conference in Copenhagen.
She added, “Our data protection rules already give Europeans control over their own data. They allow me to stop companies misusing my data in a way that’s bad for me. But they don’t help me, if the problems come from the way that they use other people’s data, to draw conclusions about me or to undermine democracy. So we may also need broader rules to make sure that the way companies collect and use data doesn’t harm the fundamental values of our society.”
