Top tech leaders say it’s time for the sector to stop self-regulating

The tech sector has fiercely argued for how important self-regulation is for innovation. But now Silicon Valley veterans are calling for more government rules.

The first is Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft. He argues that governments need to put up guardrails around tech titans or risk cannibalizing the fabric of the US.

A second is Roger McNamee, a venture capitalist who was one of Facebook’s early investors. Things have, however, changed. Following the Cambridge Analytica and other scandals, he wrote a series of opinion pieces arguing for more regulations.

He has now repeated this view and called for more regulations for companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple. McNamee accuses these companies of prioritizing profit over civic duties.
