Construction of Akon’s $6bn cryptocurrency-powered Wakanda-inspired city has started

American-Senegalese singer Akon has announced that the construction of Akon City has begun and that it will resemble the fictional country Wakanda from the Marvel movie Black Panther.

Akon has talked about the cryptocurrency-run project for a few years, but it seems as if construction of the city has now begun, according to an interview the singer did with TMZ.

He said that the project has broken ground in Senegal and that the centrepiece of the project will be a 5,000-bed hospital, which is said to cost roughly $1bn to build.

The construction of the city will also include residences, hotels, schools, police and fire departments, an airstrip and a mall as well as other common features of modern cities.

Akon announced that he had signed an agreement with Senegal at the beginning of the year to create the 2,000 acre city and  is expecting the first phase of the project to be completed by 2023.

Other celebrities who have embraced cryptocurrencies include professional boxer turned singer and Philippine senator Manny Pacquiao who announced his PAC Coin in September 2019, boxer Floyd Mayweather has promoted a cryptocurrency marketing firm named Crypto Media Group and tennis player Caroline Wozniacki teamed up with singer Jason Durelo in October 2018 to announce their cryptocurrency via GCOX.
