Cybersecurity company Cygilant has fallen victim to a ransomware attack

Threat detection company Cygilant has fallen victim to a cyber attack and is still investigating the damage.

The ransomware strain used in the attack is believed to be NetWalker, a ransomware-as-a-service group, according to TechCrunch.

The group allows other criminals to essentially rent the software to launch their own attacks.

Christina Lattuca, Cygilant’s chief financial officer, said in a statement that the company’s “cyber defence and response center team took immediate and decisive action to stop the progression of the attack.”

“We are working closely with third-party forensic investigators and law enforcement to understand the full nature and impact of the attack,” Lattuca added. “Cygilant is committed to the ongoing security of our network and to continuously strengthening all aspects of our security program.”

Back in May, we reported that Cygilant was planning to open a new office in Northern Ireland. The Belfast office was said to create 65 new jobs.
