85% of CISOs have sacrificed cybersecurity to implement remote working – study claims

Worrying stats suggest that 85% of CISOs claim they have sacrificed cybersecurity to quickly enable remote working, according to a new study from Netwrix.

The cybersecurity company completed a survey, 2020 Cyber Threats Report, which collates the responses of 937 IT professionals around the world on cyber threats.

One of the other key findings of the report was that one in four organisations feel they are more exposed to risks than prior to the pandemic. Of those, 63% said they had seen an increase in the frequency of cyberattacks, while 60% found new security gaps due to a transition to a working from home environment.

Respondents were also asked to state the types of incidents they have been subject to since working from home. The most common was phishing (48%), followed by admin mistakes (27%) and improper data sharing by employees (26%).

Netwrix CEO Steve Dickson said, “The broad disruption to businesses and swift transition to WFH caused by the pandemic forced many organizations to prioritize service availability over security. Now that we are all more comfortable with the new normal, IT and security pros should re-examine their earlier decisions with the goal of closing security gaps.

“This requires identifying sensitive information and reducing its exposure, gaining visibility into user activity, and automating change and configuration auditing to ensure rapid incident detection.”

Some of the other findings in its report included 25% of respondents have experienced ransomware or malware, 14% have encountered data theft by employees, 54% of CISOs lacked visibility to meet data protection requirements and 66% of IT  professionals regularly report to executive leadership on the state of cybersecurity.
