Australia’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange accidentally compromised over 270,000 customers’ accounts

From: RegTech Analyst

Cryptocurrency exchange BTC Markets accidentally exposed more than 270,000 of its customers’ email addresses and names by email.

“Earlier today, an announcement from BTC Markets exposed client names and email addresses. This is a deeply regrettable situation and we apologise wholeheartedly for it,” BTC Markets tweeted on Tuesday evening, Business Insider reported.

What happened was that the exchange had included all of its customers’ email addresses in the “to” section in an announcement it had sent out, leaving the  contact information available for everyone to see.

The emails were sent out in batches of 1,000, meaning each receiver could only see 999 other users’ information.

BTC Markets said that while no passwords had been shared, it had breached the privacy of its users and that it would report itself to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

BTC Markets claims to be Australia’s biggest crypto exchange.
