Mastercard expands its Priceless Planet Coalition to include 15 new restoration projects across six continents, boosting its goal of restoring 100 million trees.
It now has 18 projects live around the world, as consumer support for these projects increase. The company claims consumer donations to environmentally focused charities grew 48.4% in 2022, compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
Priceless Planet Coalition is supported by over 100 partners, including sustainably minded merchants, FinTechs and global banks. Each partner helps fund forest restoration through consumer engagement and donation campaigns to encourage people to take climate-friendly actions or make contributions through its donation platform.
The campaign’s projects are in Australia, Cambodia, China, India, the Philippines, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, France, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Malawi, United Arab Emirates, Mexico and the US.
Its projects are not just focused on planting trees, but regrowing forests in places where there is the greatest need and potential to have a positive impact on climate, community and biodiversity goals. Work is guided by restoration partners, Conservation International and World Resources Institute.
Consumers have increased the amount they donate to environmentally focused causes. Mastercard Economics Institute, which analyses macroeconomic trends, found donations increased in many countries, including the UK by 287%, in Germany by 101% and Belgium by 97%.
“There’s growing acknowledgement that investing in the preservation and restoration of the natural world around us is critical also to tackling climate change,” Bo Lidegaard, advisor to the Coalition, said.
“The Priceless Planet Coalition is designed in a way to maximize impact for the planet, rooted firmly in the best science and quality planning and monitoring.”
