North Korean hackers blamed for $100m heist

North Korean hacking group Lazarus is supposedly the prime suspect in a $100m hack of a cross-chain cryptocurrency bridge called Horizon Bridge.

This is the opinion of blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, who said there are ‘strong indications’ that the group is responsible for the theft, based on ‘the nature of the hack and the subsequent laundering of the stolen funds’.

According to Security Week, the multi-million compromise led to the theft of ETH, BNB, USDT, USDC and Dai from Horizon’s cross-chain bridge. The Lazarus hackers have already been linked to the theft of over $2bn in cryptocurrency assets from exchanges and DeFi services.

Security Week highlighted that the linking of Lazarus to this hack follows the US government assessment earlier this year that found the North Koreans were responsible for a $600m cryptocurrency heist.

Earlier this year, UN Experts claimed that North Korea was found to be stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from financial institutions, exchanges and crypto firms.
