FinTech unicorn Pleo hires former Monzo exec

FinTech unicorn Pleo has named former Monzo CTO Meri Williams as its own CTO.

This appointment comes as Pleo looks to hire more strategic talent for its UK and Ireland teams, following a strong period of growth. The company recently named Abigail Slater – who joined from American Express – as its new head of operations.

Williams joins Pleo’s senior leadership from Healx, an AI drug discovery company, where they played an integral role in advancing the team’s clinical pipeline.

Prior to Healx, Williams has served at UK challenger bank Monzo. Whilst there, they helped scale the engineering and data team by 300% and led significant investment in platform resilience and business continuity as Monzo’s customer base grew to over four million.

Pleo has experienced some significant growth over the past couple of years. Since February 2021, it has expanded into six new markets across Europe and in the past year, its users have doubled across the continent. Similarly, transaction volumes have tripled.

The company reached unicorn status in 2021, following the close of a $350m Series C round. IT is currently valued at $4.7bn.

Williams said, “I’ve been incredibly impressed by Pleo’s journey over the past few years, from a disruptor in the business spend management market to an essential platform of choice for thousands of enterprises across Europe. Now, the organisation has expanded again to become a vital lifeline for thousands of businesses across Europe.

“The excitement of this journey is in how, along with the Pleo team, I can continue the company’s journey into becoming an indispensable partner during a time of economic uncertainty and trepidation. I am thrilled to be joining this first-class team that inspired me in every interaction thus far.”

Pleo is a smart business spending solution that offers company cards and automated expense reports for employees. Its platform catches receipts and automatically categories business expenses, removing the need for manual reports.

The company recently partnered with open banking platform Yapily to enable simplified payments experiences for UK users.
