How the Americans with Disabilities Act continues to inspire change

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted on July 26, 1990, has been a groundbreaking piece of legislation promoting accessibility, equality, and inclusion for people with disabilities (PWD). With around 61 million individuals in the US living with a disability, the act recognises disability as the largest minority group, covering a wide range of physical or mental impairments.

ESG FinTech company Position Green recently explored what impact the ADA has had since 1990 in promoting accessibility, equality, and inclusion for people with disabilities.

One of the pivotal aspects of the ADA is its prohibition of discrimination in various sectors, including employment. However, despite the ADA’s efforts, individuals with disabilities continue to face significant challenges in finding employment. In 2022, the employment-population ratio for PWD stood at just 21.3%, a striking contrast to the 65.4% for individuals without disabilities.

Addressing these employment disparities requires proactive measures. Employers must engage in disability inclusion initiatives by offering reasonable accommodations, fostering an inclusive workplace, and providing support and training programs. Raising awareness about the advantages of hiring PWD is key to dispelling biases, increasing opportunities, and narrowing the employment gap.

The ADA has been instrumental in mandating accessibility and reasonable accommodations, thus empowering PWD to live more independently. But challenges persist, especially in digital accessibility and outdated infrastructure. Investments in technology and renovations aligned with universal design principles are vital to enhance accessibility for all.

Celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the ADA, we acknowledge its profound impact on rights, accessibility, and equality for PWD. Although significant progress has been made, there is still work to be done to dismantle barriers and cultivate a culture of respect and acceptance.
