Why having a green product is not enough to make the future green

In a recent podcast by Position Green, the firm’s executive director Joachim Nahem spoke to Hege Marie Norheim, EVP Corporate Public Affairs and Sustainability of FREYR Battery to talk more about why having a ‘green’ product is not enough to make the future green. 

One of the hottest topics of discussion right now in on the ESG sector, and how the rules and regulations of the sector are impacting processes within the industry. What does ESG mean for a sustainability-focused manufacturing company like FREYR?

Norheim remarked, “This is really core to all of us who work here. I think we’ve been able to attract a lot of people based on our approach to sustainability and ESG. So our whole vision is that the world has tand is on his way to decarbonization and two of the biggest sectors where that has to happen is in transportation and in the power sector. And batteries are a key enabler to do both clearly.”

One of the key challenges around decarbonisation, however, is to make sure that it remains green. Nordheim highlighted the firm wants the whole value chain from the mining of the minerals into the processing of those minerals and its whole manufacturing process to leave a smaller carbon footprint as possible.

Remaining conscious to the need to keep a clean footprint is also key to Nordheim.

She explained, “This was really key to the whole idea of our founders, that we would offer something different. Today, 95% of batteries that are sold in the world are produced in China and they are based on coal power.

“So, it is clear that the industry that is going to enable decarbonization also has to provide that to our own citizens in our own actions. So yes, this is core to us.”
