Thunes, a leader in global cross-border payments, has announced an expansion of its ambitious tree-planting initiative in collaboration with Handprint, a company dedicated to impactful environmental projects.
Under this enhanced initiative, Thunes has pledged to plant a tree for every 5,000 transactions processed through its platform over the next two years. This initiative not only reflects Thunes’ commitment to sustainability but also empowers its customers and partners to contribute positively to the environment through their payment processing activities.
Handprint, renowned for connecting businesses with regenerative projects, aligns its efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company’s projects are diverse, ranging from reforestation and coral reef construction to educational programs and combating biodiversity loss.
Thunes’ contributions are particularly significant in the realm of reforestation, with ongoing projects in Indonesia, Nigeria, India, and Kenya, focusing predominantly on mangrove tree restoration. The company plans to expand these efforts further, targeting additional regions in its operational landscape.
Since partnering with Handprint in 2022, Thunes has made remarkable progress, planting over 125,000 mangrove trees. These trees, depending on local conditions, are capable of absorbing significant amounts of CO2, ranging from 180 to 500 kg over a 20-year lifespan. This initiative aligns with multiple SDGs, including Climate Action, Life Below Water, and Life on Land, underscoring Thunes’ holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
Deputy Chairman of Thunes, Peter De Caluwe, expressed the company’s vision: “With our commitment to reforestation and biodiversity, we are making a positive impact on the environment with every transaction. Handprint’s impressive standards and far-reaching work will enable us to deliver an effective sustainability programme. Furthermore, our pledge helps differentiate Thunes as a truly innovative payment partner.”
Dr Simon Schillebeeckx, Chief Vision Officer at Handprint, also reflected on the partnership: “We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Thunes to help it and its customers play a more meaningful role in regenerative sustainability. All industries, including fintechs, can do more to support nature, improve biodiversity and protect people. Our platform connects an enterprise’s KPIs to specific sustainability initiatives, making it easy for them to make a tangible difference.”
