S&P Global Sustainable1 has introduced the Municipal Climate Physical Risk dataset to address the risks posed by climate change to municipal bonds.
S&P Global Sustainable1 specialises in providing comprehensive data analytics solutions to assess environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks for investors and market participants.
The newly launched Municipal Climate Physical Risk dataset offers insights into climate hazard exposures for U.S. local governments and their general obligation bonds.
Spanning over 3,100 U.S. counties, all 50 states, and 47,000 general obligation bond issues, the dataset covers nine climate hazards across four climate scenarios, averaged for decadal time periods from the 2020s through 2090s.
It includes exposure scores comparing regional exposure to climate change hazards both nationally and globally, along with exposure metrics indicating the percentage of a region’s GDP and population exposed to climate hazards.
“From high water stress in the West to compound exposure to flooding and tropical cyclones in the Southeast, states, cities, and towns across the U.S. are seeing an increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events caused by climate change,” said Steven Bullock, Managing Director, Global Head of Research and Methodology at S&P Global Sustainable1.
