Open English and dLocal forge strategic partnership to revolutionise local payments in emerging markets

Open English, an online English-learning platform operating in over 30 countries, and dLocal, a leading cross-border payment platform specializing in high-growth markets, have recently announced a significant partnership.

The partnership between Open English and dLocal is strategically designed to make education more accessible by simplifying payment processes. By incorporating local and alternative payment methods, the collaboration aims to remove financial barriers for students in emerging markets, ensuring they can easily access learning resources.

Open English is a prominent online platform dedicated to teaching English to students globally, particularly in Latin America and Asia. It offers various interactive English courses designed to improve language proficiency effectively.

dLocal focuses on streamlining cross-border payments. It provides a robust platform that supports local payment methods across several high-growth markets. The “One dLocal” concept simplifies the payment process for global enterprises, facilitating seamless transactions without the need for multiple regional setups.

This collaboration introduces new payment methods tailored specifically for eLearning platforms. These include options like bank transfers, debit cards, cash payments, installments, and region-specific methods such as Boleto and Pix, available immediately to learners in multiple countries including Brazil, Argentina, and Vietnam.

The global eLearning market, valued at $3bn in 2023, continues to face challenges like high transaction fees and complex payment processes, which this partnership addresses. By providing localised payment solutions and competitive pricing, dLocal and Open English aim to reduce these barriers, potentially increasing student enrolment and revenue for educational institutions.

Open English SVP of Product Wilmer Sarmiento said, “Making the decision to partner with dLocal was as easy as integrating the platform itself.

“They provide local and alternative payment methods that are crucial to our audience, such as instant payments, compliance, and features such as seamless subscription management, which is fantastic. They helped us achieve one of our critical goals: To make sure we can enable access to our platform to as many students as possible by offering them their favorite payment methods.”

dLocal SVP Head of Americas Justo Benetti said, “Enabling a sector crucial to the development of emerging markets encapsulates the essence of the ‘why’ behind dLocal.

“We’re proud to partner with Open English, an established leader in LATAM with a rapidly expanding presence in markets globally. We look forward to Open English and their learners benefitting from our features tailored to e-learning and scaling that experience with them through our one API.”
