Tietoevry survey reveals Nordic seniors’ struggle with digital services

A survey by Tietoevry has shed light on the digital accessibility experiences of elderly citizens aged 65 and over in Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

The study, which reached 3,000 participants, highlights the transformative impact of digitalization on everyday life in the Nordic region.

According to the findings, while 78% of respondents acknowledge that digitalization enhances daily activities, 30% express concerns about keeping pace with technological advancements. Alarmingly, one in five seniors feels their independence dwindling due to the digitization of services, underscoring the urgency for inclusive digital solutions.

Despite spending an average of three hours per day on digital services, many elderly individuals encounter challenges navigating online platforms. Banking, healthcare, and public administration services emerge as the most utilised digital services, reflecting seniors’ reliance on essential online functionalities.

Nadia Törnroos, Tietoevry’s Accessibility Specialist, emphasises the importance of tailored solutions, stating, “Accessibility is not about one universal solution that fits all; it’s about inclusion for everyone.” She underscores the need to understand diverse user needs to foster a more inclusive digital society.

Significantly, the survey highlights disparities in digital confidence across the Nordic countries. While only 45% of Swedes and 69% of Norwegians occasionally require assistance with digital services, a staggering 76% of Finns express the need for support. Finns also exhibit higher uncertainty regarding their digital skills compared to their counterparts.

Interestingly, the study reveals generational dynamics in seeking digital assistance, with Finnish and Norwegian seniors more likely to turn to their offspring for help compared to Swedes. Moreover, less than half of respondents perceive digital services as reliable, indicating room for improvement in digital infrastructure.

Conducted in April 2024, the survey underscores the imperative of advancing digital accessibility initiatives. By addressing the diverse needs of elderly citizens, technology companies like Tietoevry and their partners can play a pivotal role in building a more inclusive digital landscape in the Nordics.

“Tietoevry’s survey highlights the imperative of understanding diverse user needs to foster a more inclusive digital society,” said Nadia Törnroos, Tietoevry’s Accessibility Specialist.
