Cloudflare strengthens SASE network with BastionZero acquisition

Cloudflare, a connectivity cloud company, has announced the acquisition of BastionZero, a zero-trust infrastructure access platform.

Cloudflare’s acquisition of BastionZero aims to bolster its Cloudflare One platform by integrating advanced Zero Trust infrastructure access controls. This move is designed to enhance remote access to core IT systems, expanding the capabilities of Cloudflare’s secure access service edge (SASE) platform.

Cloudflare, founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, is renowned for its comprehensive cloud services that enhance internet security and performance. It offers a range of products, including a leading-edge secure access service edge (SASE) platform known as Cloudflare One.

BastionZero, a relatively newer entrant in the Zero Trust infrastructure access space, provides innovative solutions designed to secure remote access to critical IT infrastructure, such as servers, Kubernetes clusters, and databases. Its unique cryptographic approach facilitates simple, passwordless access, enhancing security and compliance.

The acquisition of BastionZero is a strategic move to enhance Cloudflare’s VPN replacement solutions. By incorporating BastionZero’s technology, Cloudflare One will now provide IT and security teams with Zero Trust controls over more extensive infrastructure resources. This integration aims to simplify the management of hybrid IT environments while maintaining high security standards through Zero Trust practices.

Cloudflare One, launched in 2020, is one of the fastest-growing platforms in the secure access service edge (SASE) and security service edge (SSE) markets. It is designed to ensure that only the appropriate employees can access the necessary internal systems and data with minimal burden. This acquisition will further expand Cloudflare’s capabilities in the SASE market, supporting its goal of unifying IT security tools on a single platform.

Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince said, “The world of work has changed dramatically. Employees have the expectation that they can effectively do their work from anywhere. There’s no reason why teams managing an organization’s most important systems can’t have the same flexibility.

“Incorporating BastionZero into Cloudflare One gives IT teams access to an organization’s most critical inner workings securely, wherever they are. Millions of organizations around the world trust Cloudflare to protect their systems and data so they can focus on their business and their customers. The addition of BastionZero is just one more way we can protect them like no one else can.”

BastionZero co-founder and CEO Sharon Goldberg said, “Scalable and secure remote access to company servers and other infrastructure is table stakes for every IT and development team. But home-grown solutions increasingly create security risks and operational costs.

“This acquisition enables us to deeply integrate BastionZero’s unique cryptographic approach for simple passwordless infrastructure access into the world’s largest secure access service edge (SASE) network. We’re proud to join Cloudflare to help companies provide Zero Trust access to their most critical infrastructure assets.”
