ERM, a sustainability advisory firm, has agreed to acquire Australian climate risk and energy transition consultancy Energetics, as it looks to bolster its growth in the Asia Pacific region.

The firm will leverage the acquisition to enhance its capacity to provide strategic advice and practical on-ground implementation across Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region, according to ESG Today.

Founded in 1984, Energetics collaborates with large businesses, investors, and governments, addressing critical issues such as climate change, decarbonisation, and energy transition.

With a workforce of around 100 professionals, Energetics offers tailored services, including climate resiliency strategies, climate risk data analysis, renewable energy transition options, net zero planning, and tracking power purchase agreements (PPA) for renewable energy transactions.

Energetics CEO Dr. Mary Stewart reflected on the firm’s history, stating, “Energetics first opened its doors for business 40 years ago. Since then, we’ve worked across every sector of Australia’s economy and developed long-standing relationships advising some of the country’s largest businesses. Energetics’ alumni can be found leading sustainability, climate and energy risk management teams here and overseas.”

This announcement is part of ERM’s ongoing series of acquisitions in the ESG consulting and advisory sector.

In 2022, ERM’s acquired Australian climate consultancy Point Advisory – and recent acquisitions also include sustainable finance and ESG advisory firm NINT, climate, clean energy, and water resiliency advisory firm Coho, marine planning and environmental consultancy MarineSpace, and low-carbon technology solutions firm Element Energy.

Matt Klein, ERM’s Global Co-Head of Corporate Sustainability and Climate Change, commented, “Bringing together Energetics and ERM creates Australia’s most comprehensive sustainability and climate change advisory firm. This acquisition is critical to the growth of ERM in the region and is in direct response to Australia’s plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Post-acquisition, Energetics will be integrated into ERM’s climate change and corporate sustainability practice.
