Visa has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Featurespace, a developer of real-time AI payments protection technology.

Based out of Cambridge University’s engineering department, Featurespace has made significant strides in deploying algorithmic solutions that scrutinise transaction data to detect subtle fraud instances.

The acquisition aims to enhance Visa’s robust portfolio of fraud detection and risk-scoring solutions, which are vital for clients worldwide to both expand and safeguard their businesses. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the strategic value is evident as it promises to fortify Visa’s capabilities in managing payments fraud.

Visa stands as a towering figure in the financial world, offering extensive digital payment solutions that facilitate transactions globally. Their commitment to security is demonstrated by their hefty investments in technology aimed at minimising fraud and bolstering network security. On the other hand, Featurespace has carved a niche in AI technology, focusing on real-time fraud detection through advanced algorithmic analysis, a testament to its innovative origins from Cambridge University’s talent pool.

This acquisition is set to close in fiscal year 2025, pending the usual closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. It is expected to deliver substantial benefits not only to financial institutions but also to consumers and the broader payments industry by enhancing real-time fraud management capabilities.

The amalgamation of Visa’s global reach and Featurespace’s AI expertise will likely set new standards in the payments ecosystem, particularly in real-time fraud prevention.

Visa’s Global Head of Value-added Services, Antony Cahill, commented, “Providing our clients with solutions that can adapt to and anticipate the changing threat landscape is of the utmost importance. Featurespace’s strong foundation in AI will enhance our existing product portfolio and enable us to address our clients’ most complex and pressing challenges. We look forward to welcoming the Featurespace team to Visa.”

Dave Excell, Founder of Featurespace, also shared his enthusiasm, “Over the past 12 years we have served the financial services industry, building a company that has gone from strength to strength, and we are thrilled to become a part of Visa. With Visa, we can bring the innovation, integrity and purpose of our platform and our team to more payment service providers and ultimately, stop more people from becoming victims of financial crime.”
