A comprehensive survey by BlackRock has unveiled that an overwhelming 99% of insurers have embraced climate transition goals within their investment portfolios, highlighting a robust shift towards sustainability.
According to ESG Today, the survey, encompassing senior executives from 410 insurance companies across various global markets, reveals a strong commitment to achieving net zero emissions, with over half of the insurers setting a target date.
The driving force behind these green investment strategies is primarily the management and mitigation of climate risks, as stated by 57% of respondents. Other significant factors include responding to stakeholder and beneficiary interests (54%), contributing to real-world impact (42%), and complying with regulatory obligations (47%). The insurers are not only aligning their investments with climate goals but are also increasingly confident in the sector, with two-thirds reporting a greater conviction in low-carbon transition investments compared to last year.
Investment trends among the insurers are distinctly geared towards technologies and infrastructure that support the low-carbon transition. Key areas of interest include transition technologies like batteries, carbon capture, and energy storage (63%), as well as clean energy infrastructure such as wind and solar (59%). The survey also indicates a focus on natural capital and biodiversity (41%) and transition metals and materials (37%).
Mark Erickson, Global Head of the Financial Institutions Group at BlackRock, emphasized the pivotal role of insurers in bridging global financing gaps. He noted, “Insurers are becoming instrumental in transition finance initiatives, historically dominated by industry and public bodies. Today, they are not only directing capital towards these crucial areas but also collaborating with asset managers to develop blended finance solutions that address these funding needs.”
In conclusion, this survey underscores the insurance sector’s proactive approach to integrating climate transition goals into their investment strategies, thereby playing a crucial role in global sustainability efforts.
