WhatsApp, the globally recognised messaging app connecting over 2bn users worldwide, is set to launch its P2P payments service to all of its Indian users.

Known for its simple interface and reliability, the platform has been expanding into FinTech, aiming to integrate payments into its ecosystem, according to Finextra.

India’s massive adoption of digital payments has created a fertile ground for innovation. WhatsApp seeks to capitalise on the success of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), offering seamless peer-to-peer (P2P) payment capabilities to its 500m users.

WhatsApp provides a platform for instant messaging, voice, and video calling, and has steadily integrated new features like payments to enhance user experience.

Its extensive reach and user-friendly design make it a key player in digital connectivity.

WhatsApp Pay, integrated into the app, enables users to send money directly to family, friends, and loved ones from their contacts menu. Leveraging India’s UPI, it simplifies the process of transferring money, eliminating the need for separate apps or platforms.

Initially launched in 2020, WhatsApp Pay faced phased rollouts due to restrictions from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The service began with a limit of 40m users, later increased to 100m in 2022. As of now, the NPCI has removed the cap, allowing WhatsApp Pay to reach its entire Indian user base.
