EFRAG and CDP simplify climate disclosure with new mapping tool

The EFRAG and CDP have unveiled a new tool that aligns the ESRS E1 climate standard with the CDP question bank.

Announced at COP29, this correspondence mapping is set to streamline the process of climate disclosure, reducing the reporting burden on companies and enhancing transparency for stakeholders.

The mapping demonstrates considerable interoperability between ESRS E1 and the CDP’s framework, particularly in key areas such as transition plans for climate change mitigation, climate change mitigation targets, and the reporting of gross Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

It also covers internal carbon pricing, offering businesses a clear guide on how CDP questions correspond to ESRS E1 disclosure requirements. This alignment not only aids in compliance but also encourages companies to leverage their data more effectively, fostering enhanced reporting efficiency.

Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, highlighted the practical benefits of this initiative: “We’re proud to unveil this mapping; because it shows we’re about more than ticking reporting boxes. We’re about making data useful and cutting the burden for businesses. By bridging ESRS E1 and the CDP question bank, companies can cut reporting complexity, tap into richer climate data and unlock real business value. These insights will power smarter business strategies, spark innovation and fuel the Earth-positive decisions we urgently need.”

Patrick de Cambourg, Chair of the EFRAG Sustainability Reporting Board, also emphasized the utility of the new tool: “This mapping provides a valuable resource for companies navigating climate disclosures under the European Sustainability Reporting Standard E1. By illustrating the alignment between ESRS E1 and the CDP question bank, we support reporting efficiency by fostering commonality and avoiding multiple reports. EFRAG remains committed to fostering interoperability and reducing complexity in the sustainability reporting landscape.”

The launch is part of an ongoing collaboration between EFRAG and CDP to enhance sustainability reporting globally. With CDP covering two-thirds of the world’s stock market, its environmental disclosure system will be instrumental for companies seeking to access ESRS-aligned data.
