Affirm, a payment network based in the U.S. that enables consumers to make flexible payments while helping merchants drive growth, and Shopify have announced the expansion of their strategic partnership into new international markets.
This collaboration marks the first global rollout of Shop Pay Installments, a buy now, pay later (BNPL) service exclusively powered by Affirm, according to FF News.
Previously available only in the U.S., the offering will now be available to select Shopify merchants in Canada through early access.
The companies plan to broaden availability to all Shopify merchants in Canada and the UK this summer, followed by launches in Australia and Western Europe, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Affirm and Shopify have collaborated closely since the initial launch of Shop Pay Installments in 2021.
The partnership is rooted in their shared goal to provide merchants with tools to increase conversion and average order values, while offering shoppers flexible, transparent payment options. By bringing this service to international markets, the two companies aim to scale these benefits globally.
Affirm enables consumers to split purchases into customised payment plans with no late or hidden fees, and with interest rates as low as 0% APR. The platform is integrated into a wide network of merchants and allows shoppers to finance purchases ranging from $35 to $30,000. Shopify, on the other hand, provides robust e-commerce solutions that power millions of businesses globally, offering tools for selling, marketing, shipping, and payment management.
As Shop Pay Installments becomes available in new markets, local Shopify merchants will be able to activate it directly via their Shopify admin dashboards. The integration requires no technical development, ensuring a seamless onboarding process. Approved customers can select from biweekly and monthly plans at checkout.
Since its launch in the U.S., Shop Pay Installments has been widely adopted by millions of consumers. The move to expand the service internationally represents a significant milestone in Affirm’s global growth strategy, with plans to engage regional partners, regulators, and stakeholders in each new territory.
Shopify chief operating officer Kaz Nejatian said, “We’re thrilled to launch Shop Pay Installments in early access to Canada as our first step beyond the U.S. Our partnership with Affirm expands our global reach, giving shoppers the flexibility to pay over time, and drives higher conversion rates for merchants worldwide.”
Affirm founder and CEO Max Levchin said, “From day one, Affirm’s partnership with Shopify has been focused on empowering merchants to succeed by offering transparent, flexible payments that unlock purchasing power for consumers. Millions of shoppers in the U.S. trust and rely on Shop Pay Installments. Today’s launch in Canada marks an exciting first step as we further extend our global presence – first with Shopify merchants, and soon after with our integrated merchants across the U.K., Europe, and Australia.”
