Klarna, an AI-powered payments and commerce network, has partnered with Visa to launch a new debit-based payment solution.
The offering, known as the Klarna Card, is issued by WebBank and powered by Visa’s Flexible Credential technology.
It allows consumers to choose between paying immediately or later, offering a flexible and transparent alternative to traditional credit cards.
The new product is a direct response to growing consumer demand for payment solutions that avoid interest charges and debt accumulation.
Klarna aims to offer a smarter way to spend, tailored to the needs of today’s digital-first users who value choice and financial control.
Founded to streamline the online shopping experience, Klarna has grown into a global FinTech leader. The company is widely recognised for its Pay in 4 and Pay Later services and is expanding its capabilities to become a modern neobank, integrating saving, borrowing, and spending features into a single platform.
The Klarna Card enables users to make payments via debit or use Klarna’s flexible instalment options at over 150m Visa-accepting merchants worldwide. The product is tightly integrated with the Klarna app, providing tools for budgeting, transaction tracking, and real-time transfers, supported by an FDIC-insured wallet.
Currently in its trial phase in the U.S., the offering is undergoing testing with early adopters. This phased rollout is designed to gather feedback, optimise features, and ensure a polished experience ahead of a wider launch in the U.S. and Europe later this year.
Additional features include three available card colours—aubergine, black, and bright green—and tiered account options, including one free and two paid plans that offer merchant discounts and increased cashback rates.
All Klarna users will have access to the debit function, while credit features will be granted following a credit check.
With over 5m consumers already on the waitlist, this product represents Klarna’s most significant step toward becoming a full-service everyday financial solution. It underscores the company’s commitment to empowering consumers with flexible, technology-driven financial tools.
Visa’s Flexible Credential technology is a key enabler behind the product, supporting a single card that can offer multiple payment experiences including debit, credit, and instalments.
Klarna chief marketing officer David Sandström said, “We consistently hear from consumers that they want the freedom to choose how and when to pay – whether that’s paying now with debit or spreading the cost over time. They want simplicity, flexibility, and transparency – all in one place. That’s exactly what has made Klarna payment methods so popular online, and now that same experience is coming to a physical card. The Klarna Card is the future of everyday banking – creating smart payments, to empower smarter shoppers.”
Visa SVP product and solutions for Europe Mathieu Altwegg said, “Millions of people around the world have embraced the choice and control offered by Visa’s Flexible Credential, and we’re delighted to extend this to even more U.S. consumers, as well as bringing it to Europe for the first time. This is a pioneering example of a future where consumers will only need one card in order to have access to their preferred ways to pay, no matter where they are, or what they’re purchasing.”
