Approov, a UK-based mobile app and API security company, has raised £5m in a Series A funding round as it aims to expand its efforts to combat evolving digital threats, including those driven by AI.
The investment round was led by the Investment Fund for Scotland, managed by Maven Capital Partners, with further participation from Souter Investments, Scottish Enterprise and returning backer Lanza techVentures.
Approov provides patented app attestation technology that prevents tampering and protects backend APIs from unauthorised access. Its real-time security solutions are designed to defend against threats such as emulators, rooted devices, and credential-stuffing bots, which are becoming more sophisticated with the rise of AI.
The new capital will be used to expand Approov’s research and development team in Edinburgh. This will support the advancement of the company’s technology and the development of more robust defences to secure mobile applications and APIs across all platforms.
The raise comes at a critical time as global regulatory frameworks are undergoing rapid change. Initiatives like the EU’s Digital Markets Act and the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill are challenging traditional app store gatekeepers, opening opportunities for developers to distribute apps directly to users and reclaim lost revenue. Approov’s technology supports this shift by offering developers a secure path to distribute and protect their apps across fragmented ecosystems.
The company’s technology is already trusted by major clients across sectors including healthcare, FinTech, connected vehicles, and e-commerce, offering secure engagement even in high-risk digital environments.
Approov CEO Ted Miracco said, “As the threat landscape continues to evolve, developers and enterprises alike are recognizing that mobile app security cannot be an afterthought. This funding marks a pivotal moment in our mission to ensure that every mobile app instance is authenticated and that backend APIs are protected from fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access.”
TAG Infosphere CEO and former AT&T chief information security officer Dr Edward Amoroso said, “As mobile ecosystems face AI-driven threats and new regulations like the EU Digital Markets Act and UK consumer laws, the need for strong, independent app and API security is urgent. Approov delivers essential trust across fragmented platforms, including non-GMS Android and HarmonyOS. Maven Capital Partners’ investment reflects growing recognition that API protection—across any device or OS—is key to securing digital infrastructure in this new cyber risk era.”
