Airwallex, a global financial platform for modern businesses, has acquired OpenPay, a San Francisco-based billing platform offering subscription management, payment orchestration, and revenue analytics.
The acquisition will integrate OpenPay’s billing and analytics capabilities into Airwallex’s global infrastructure, according to FF News.
The move is aimed at strengthening Airwallex’s competitiveness against players such as Stripe Billing and Recurly while helping its customers automate and unlock revenue growth. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Airwallex, founded in 2015 in Melbourne and now headquartered in Singapore, provides cross-border payments, business accounts, cards, and embedded financial services to businesses worldwide. The company has grown rapidly by focusing on modernising financial infrastructure for international commerce.
OpenPay, founded in San Francisco, has built a billing and subscription management platform that stands out for its smart payment routing, AI-driven retention tools, real-time insights, and flexible billing models. Its technology supports usage-based, tiered, and flat fee subscriptions, catering to businesses monetising by tokens, compute, or API calls – a growing demand among AI firms and other consumption-driven industries.
With OpenPay’s integration, Airwallex aims to offer the first global billing platform capable of handling multi-currency and cross-border needs. The company said this will lower costs, boost revenue, and enable businesses to scale subscription models across markets seamlessly.
The companies highlighted that traditional billing systems were not designed for global, multi-currency environments, leaving a gap that Airwallex now intends to fill. The acquisition also positions Airwallex to capture rising demand for hybrid and usage-based billing, particularly within AI and other fast-scaling industries.
Airwallex CEO Jack Zhang said, “Most billing systems are locked in the past, they were never designed for a global, multi-currency world. That’s the gap we’re closing. By bringing OpenPay’s subscription management, orchestration, and analytics capabilities into Airwallex, we’re creating the first truly global billing platform. The OpenPay team brings deep technical strength and a shared conviction in our vision, and we’re thrilled to have them on board as we help businesses scale seamlessly across borders.”
OpenPay CEO Lance Co Ting Keh said, “We started OpenPay to solve the complexity of recurring revenue management. We envisioned a smarter, more intuitive platform that empowers subscription businesses to scale without barriers. In Airwallex, we found a partner who shares our vision, our DNA, and has the global reach to apply our work at scale. We are very proud of what we’ve built and excited for our next chapter as we partner with Airwallex to set a new standard, creating a paradigm shift in global payments.”
