Email security firm AegisAI bags $13m seed round

AegisAI

AegisAI, a cybersecurity startup founded by former Google Safe Browsing and reCAPTCHA leaders Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo, has announced its launch alongside a new funding round.

The company has raised $13m in seed funding, led by Accel and Foundation Capital. The investment is expected to support the company’s product development, hiring plans, and go-to-market strategy as it scales its platform.

AegisAI is focused on building autonomous AI agents designed to stop phishing, malware, and business email compromise attacks before they reach inboxes. The system aims to reduce false positives by up to 90% compared with traditional solutions.

The fresh capital will be used to accelerate engineering growth, improve the product, and help expand customer adoption of its platform. The firm intends to position its technology as a replacement for rule-based systems that often struggle against modern adversarial threats.

The company highlights that AI has created a new wave of threats that legacy tools cannot handle. Attackers can now rotate images and content, producing phishing lures that are more convincing than ever. A study in 2024 revealed that phishing messages generated by large language models had a click-through rate of 54%, compared with just 12% for human-written attempts. AegisAI argues its platform provides a necessary paradigm shift, allowing real-time AI agents to collaborate, inspect, and neutralise threats automatically.

Its technology integrates with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace through APIs and continuously learns from adversarial behaviour, sharing threat intelligence across its customer base. The platform aims to avoid the operational burden of managing alerts and rules by focusing on security outcomes.

AegisAI CEO and co-founder Cy Khormaee said, “We’ve spent almost a decade each protecting billions of users at Google, we’ve seen firsthand how enterprise email defenses are falling behind. We’re seeing the sophistication of AI powered attacks increase rapidly while existing email security defences are standing still. This leaves security leaders without the tools they need to defend their organizations.”

AegisAI CTO and co-founder Ryan Luo said, “We don’t believe in creating more alerts — we believe in creating better security outcomes. Our mission is to protect organizations without adding operational burden and to give security teams the reliable intelligence they need to focus on what matters most.”

Customers have also endorsed the platform. Mesh CEO Bam Azizi said, “As a former security founder, I’ve seen the cat-and-mouse game play out for decades—especially in email security, where attackers constantly evolve to trick employees. Aegis is the first solution that truly changes the game. They came into Mesh and stopped attackers in their tracks. Our dashboard shows everything from fuzzing attempts to AI-generated spear phishing and BEC, and Aegis catches them all—without my team wasting time managing rules.”

Lokker CEO Ian Cohen added, “We immediately saw threats to our accounting, engineering, and executives teams in the dashboard. Aegis enabled us to see and stop these threats without our team manually hunting them down.”
