Tesseract secures MiCA licence for DeFi portfolio services

Tesseract, a Helsinki-based digital asset specialist, has secured its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) licence from the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA).

The approval grants the company authorisation to provide portfolio management and custody, asset transfers, investment advice, and the receiving and transmitting of client orders.

The development positions Tesseract as the first entity regulated under MiCA to offer DeFi-generated yield through active portfolio management. While other portfolio management licences have been issued under the framework, Tesseract is the only one to serve both institutional and retail clients, with a particular focus on yield strategies in decentralised finance. The company already counts more than 20,000 retail end-users and plans to onboard new clients immediately through its Managed DeFi product.

Tesseract CEO James Harris said, “Being the first to offer DeFi-generated yield through active portfolio management under the MiCA framework is a proud moment for Tesseract, and a proof point of our commitment to providing robust risk management with tailored strategies for our clients. We look forward to building on our successes and expanding our institutional lending and Managed DeFi solutions to clients across Europe.”

Tesseract head of legal & compliance Pia Hidén said, “We see it as a positive development that crypto asset management is now brought within the scope of regulation, just like traditional asset management.

“By securing MiCA approval for the services covered by our license, we are demonstrating our commitment to compliance and robust risk management, while also increasing trust and confidence among our clients. Bringing digital assets under a clear regulatory framework reassures clients that they are operating in a secure, transparent, and fully regulated environment, supporting the broader adoption of digital finance.”

The company’s Managed DeFi product offers a professionally managed investment solution for digital asset holders looking for exposure to decentralised opportunities without navigating complex protocols directly.

Prior to receiving MiCA approval, Tesseract had operated under a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) licence supervised by the FIN-FSA. The new authorisation paves the way for Tesseract to broaden its product suite and extend regulated offerings into international markets.
