Mastercard and Smile ID, an African identity verification provider, have strengthened their partnership to accelerate the adoption of secure digital identity solutions across the continent.

The collaboration aims to address challenges around fraud prevention and financial inclusion by enabling banks, FinTechs, telecoms and mobile money operators to onboard customers more efficiently. By combining Mastercard’s global expertise in identity verification with Smile ID’s regional data and fraud detection capabilities, the partnership is designed to support safe participation in the digital economy.

Mastercard has operated in Africa for more than 50 years, working with governments, businesses and communities to foster financial inclusion and economic development. Smile ID, meanwhile, provides verification tools that integrate with government and trusted data sources, enabling near real-time onboarding and fraud checks. Together, the two companies intend to provide scalable, compliant solutions that will be critical as Africa’s digital economy, projected to reach $1.5tn by 2030, continues its rapid expansion.

As part of the agreement, Mastercard has also taken a minority stake in Smile ID, signalling its long-term commitment to digital trust and innovation in Africa. The deal extends their strategic commercial relationship and brings Smile ID’s identity platform into Mastercard’s ecosystem, where it will be offered to banks, telecom providers, mobile wallets and other enterprises.

Through this integration, Mastercard customers will be able to access tools that allow instant onboarding across African markets, improved fraud prevention against threats such as synthetic identities, and compliance with both local and international Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) rules. The scalable framework also supports cross-border commerce, unlocking further opportunities for digital growth.

Smile ID’s pan-African reach and unique integrations with governments provide additional value for Mastercard’s partners, particularly in markets where fragmented identity systems have slowed down digital expansion.

Mastercard executive vice president of services for EEMEA Selin Bahadirli said, “This partnership with Smile ID is a pivotal step in advancing digital trust and inclusion across Africa. As fragmented identity systems slow down businesses and lock millions out of the digital economy, Smile ID’s innovative identity platform complements Mastercard’s commitment to fostering secure and inclusive digital ecosystems.”

Smile ID CEO Mark Straub said, “The surge in synthetic identity fraud in Africa is costing banks and lenders hundreds of millions of dollars a year. By joining forces with Mastercard we can help turn the tide. As we combine insights and technologies, we can expand opportunities for consumers by giving banks and mobile wallets the confidence to onboard the next 300 million African users securely, in seconds.”
