Katz’s Delicatessen, the legendary New York City Jewish deli founded in 1888, and Square have announced a partnership aimed at modernising operations and scaling growth for the iconic restaurant.
The collaboration is designed to enable Katz’s to meet rising demand both in-store and online, while ensuring the authentic dining experience that has defined it for generations remains intact. The deal will see Square’s integrated technology help streamline operations, enhance payment systems, and support nationwide delivery.
Katz’s Delicatessen, famous for its house-cured, hand-carved pastrami and corned beef, serves tens of thousands of pounds of meat weekly across its Lower East Side flagship, Brooklyn’s DeKalb Market Hall location, and its nationwide shipping business. Square, meanwhile, offers a comprehensive platform for restaurants and retailers to unify payments, point-of-sale solutions, and e-commerce integrations.
The deli’s operational challenges stemmed from managing high-volume counter service alongside growing shipping demand across the US. Square’s platform provides Katz’s with a centralised solution covering counter orders, online transactions, and event-based sales. Square Register supports order accuracy and line management in Katz’s locations, while Square Terminals and Handhelds are used for off-site merchandise and special events.
For its national e-commerce operation, which traces its roots to WWII’s “Send a Salami to your Boy in the Army” campaign, Katz’s uses Square’s Magento integration to manage orders efficiently. The service now delivers to hundreds of thousands of customers across the country.
As part of the partnership, the two companies will also launch national activations celebrating culinary heritage and neighbourhood commerce. This will include pop-up experiences bringing Katz’s famed deli flavours to new audiences nationwide.
Katz’s Delicatessen owner Jake Dell said, “Katz’s has been serving New Yorkers and visitors from around the world for generations, and while our pastrami recipe hasn’t changed since 1888, the way our customers want to order and pay has. Partnering with Square allows us to build on the experience our customers love while embracing modern commerce solutions. Whether they’re dining in, ordering online, or shipping across the country, we’re making it easier than ever to experience Katz’s.”
Block global head of sales and marketing Nick Molnar said, “Katz’s Delicatessen exemplifies how iconic establishments can embrace technology to create new pathways for growth while preserving their authenticity. Square’s integrated commerce solutions are designed for premium quick-service restaurants operating in dynamic, high-volume environments – including those like Katz’s that need seamless integration between in-person and online sales channels. Square empowers Katz’s to serve its legendary pastrami to the next generation of customers while maintaining the traditions that have made them a culinary institution in New York and beyond.”
