SuMiTB taps OneSpan and SCSK for phishing-proof banking

SuMiTB has teamed up with SCSK Corporation and OneSpan to enhance security across its mobile banking services.

The collaboration aims to strengthen SuMiTB’s protection against escalating phishing-related fraud and account takeover attacks, while helping the bank comply with Japan’s evolving regulatory requirements for multi-factor, phishing-resistant authentication.

SCSK provides a wide range of IT solutions, including consulting, systems integration and security services, supporting digital transformation across Japan’s financial sector. OneSpan specialises in authentication and digital security technologies, offering cloud-based and on-premises solutions such as multi-factor authentication, passkeys, FIDO protocols and transaction-signing tools used globally by financial institutions. SuMiTB serves as a major trust bank providing asset management, banking, and fiduciary services across Japan’s financial system.

This marks Japan’s first deployment of OneSpan’s cloud-based FIDO authentication for mobile banking, supported through joint implementation by SCSK and OneSpan. The bank intends not only to enhance login security but also to integrate FIDO technology directly into mobile banking transactions, establishing a more resilient defence against impersonation and fraudulent transfers.

The move comes as Japan faces rising fraud losses, with account takeover incidents expected to reach roughly ¥690bn in 2025. The Financial Services Agency has proposed amendments to supervisory guidelines that would require phishing-resistant authentication across the financial sector. The partnership highlights the growing adoption of FIDO authentication as institutions prepare for stricter requirements and look to modernise their digital security frameworks. OneSpan’s cloud solution, OneSpan Cloud Authentication, is designed for rapid deployment and scalability to support regulatory compliance and secure customer interactions across digital channels.

OneSpan CEO Victor Limongelli said, “We are proud to be chosen by SuMiTB and SCSK for this landmark project. This selection not only underscores OneSpan’s leadership and credibility in Japan’s rapidly evolving FIDO market, but also demonstrates our ability to deliver enterprise-scale, phishing-resistant authentication that meets the highest regulatory standards. We are committed to helping financial institutions protect their customers and set new benchmarks for digital security.”

SCSK senior executive officer Hideho Masuda said, “We are honored to support SuMiTB in deploying OneSpan’s cloud-based FIDO authentication solution for mobile banking. This implementation demonstrates SCSK’s commitment to providing advanced, secure authentication solutions to the Japanese financial sector, and highlights the strength of our partnership with OneSpan.”
