Mastercard, a global payments technology company known for powering secure and fast transactions across international markets, has reinforced its position at the forefront of mobility innovation with the launch of its enhanced open-loop transit solution.
The new product has been introduced to simplify urban mobility, reduce friction in public transportation payments, and support cities seeking more efficient, interoperable and cost-effective transit systems, according to FF News.
Mastercard provides digital payments infrastructure, enabling consumers, merchants and governments to transact securely using cards, mobile devices and other modern payment methods. Its technology supports global commerce, financial inclusion, and digital transformation across multiple sectors.
The company’s open-loop transit solution allows riders to tap into public transport systems using existing Mastercard debit or credit cards, as well as digital wallets on mobile phones or wearables. This removes the need for dedicated travel cards, physical top-ups or supplementary ticketing systems, enabling seamless journeys across metros, buses, trains, trams and ferries.
The model also benefits visitors travelling between global cities, as they can use their usual payment method without adjusting to local ticketing systems. Cities benefit from reduced reliance on cash, streamlined operations, lower fare management costs, and improved fraud prevention.
Mastercard’s open-loop solutions are already operational in major cities worldwide, including London, New York City, Amsterdam, Milan, Singapore and Sydney.
London, a pioneer in this space, now sees contactless payments dominate daily travel. The Netherlands has recently integrated nationwide acceptance, allowing one card or device to function across all transit networks.
Meanwhile, partnerships such as that with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority contribute to broader smart-mobility ambitions, while Turkey has seen increased adoption of contactless payments for low-value transactions. Mastercard states that digital payments are increasingly shaping the future of urban movement by helping cities minimise fraud, reduce cash handling and improve daily operational efficiency.
