NatWest has formed new partnerships with four leading UK universities as it works to stimulate national innovation, bolster startup activity and expand its long-running enterprise support network.
The partnerships aim to accelerate UK entrepreneurial growth by supporting early-stage founders, student innovators and university spinouts, while helping scale-ups commercialise research-backed ideas.
Through the newly announced partnerships with the University of Manchester, University of Brighton and University of York, NatWest will deliver targeted support to founders, student entrepreneurs and university spinouts.
The bank has also joined Equinox, a new economic growth initiative led by the University of Oxford. The agreements will bring the NatWest Accelerator directly onto campuses, enabling access to mentoring, networking, export assistance and day-to-day workspace. Onsite Accelerator hubs will be created at Brighton and York, adding to NatWest’s existing network of 12 hubs across the country.
The partnerships form part of NatWest’s commitment made in March to expand its collaboration with universities. The bank expects to sign six more partnership agreements by the end of 2027.
NatWest also revealed new performance data: businesses on its Accelerator programme grow turnover by an average of 104% annually, compared with 20% in control groups. Additionally, 90% of participants remain in business after three years, versus 40% in the comparison sample.
The bank has surpassed its goal of growing the Accelerator community to 10,000 members by 2025 and plans to expand further in 2026.
NatWest also opened a new flagship Accelerator hub at its 250 Bishopsgate London headquarters, celebrated with the Round 2 final of the NatWest Accelerator Pitch competition, offering founders a share of £100,000.
NatWest CEO, commercial & institutional banking, Robert Begbie said, “Our Accelerator community has always been about empowering entrepreneurs to scale and succeed. By partnering with leading universities and surpassing our 2025 ambition, we’re showing how collaboration can drive sustainable growth across every region of the UK. In turn, this will create opportunities that align with national priorities and help build a stronger economy for all.”
University of York pro-vice-chancellor for enterprise, partnerships and engagement, Professor Kiran Trehan said, “York & North Yorkshire is a region powered by brilliant ideas and entrepreneurial talent, and this accelerator is a decisive step in strengthening the support that drives our economy. We’re bringing students, staff, regional founders, and scale-ups into a connected ecosystem that gives entrepreneurs the space to test bold ideas, while enabling our world-class academics to advance their commercial potential. NatWest’s in-person programmes will deepen the ambition, leadership, and entrepreneurial capability that sustain a competitive regional economy, while the University’s expanding international partnerships ensure that the ideas developed here can create impact on a global stage.”
