N26 partners with EPI to launch Wero payment option

N26, the mobile bank headquartered in Berlin and known for its digital-first banking services, has signed a new membership agreement with Wero, the pan-European digital wallet developed by the European Payment Initiative (EPI).

The partnership is designed to strengthen N26’s ability to provide customers with accessible, convenient and secure digital payment options across Europe, with the initial rollout planned for Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Founded with the mission to simplify banking, N26 offers fully digital current accounts, card payments and money management tools through its app, serving millions of customers across Europe.

The Wero integration will give N26 users access to a streamlined and secure payment solution that prioritises simplicity and speed. The product will introduce multiple capabilities, including the ability to send peer-to-peer payments directly in the N26 app from H2 2026, even to individuals who do not hold an N26 account.

The new payment option will leverage SEPA’s instant transfer framework to ensure seamless transactions. It will also support IBAN-less payments, enabling users to transfer funds using a phone number or email address, removing friction typically associated with P2P payments.

N26 highlighted that Wero will eventually support payments not only between individuals but also in eCommerce and physical retail environments. The phased rollout is set to begin in H2 2026, starting in three key European markets.

Marcus W. Mosen, co-CEO of N26, said, “Joining the Wero initiative is a logical step for N26 as we continue to simplify banking and payments for our customers across Europe. The development of European payment solutions like Wero is vital for the digital competitiveness and choice of payment methods.

“Wero provides a seamless, instant, and IBAN-less payment solution that allows N26 customers to use an alternative way to make payments – firstly from person to person and later also in their checkout in eCommerce and physical stores. This partnership further enhances our product offering and reinforces our commitment to enable payments our customers want.”

Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, said, “We are really pleased to announce today our collaboration with N26, a key milestone for the roll-out of Wero across Europe. Our payment solution will become available to additional millions of this neobank’s users, further accelerating our mission.

“We are happy to allow their clients to experience our secured, seamless and fast European solution of payment, particularly at a time when Europe’s digital autonomy is becoming an increasingly central topic. This partnership illustrates the growing momentum behind a unified European payment solution and strengthens our reach and ability to establish it.”
