Currys and Stripe team up to future-proof retail checkouts

Curry's

Curry’s, Stripe and Pennies have entered into a major partnership aimed at transforming the in-store payment experience across the UK and Ireland.

The partnership is designed to modernise Currys’ checkout infrastructure while giving the retailer the flexibility to adopt emerging technologies as they become commercially viable. By installing thousands of next-generation Stripe payment terminals across nearly 300 stores, Currys is laying the groundwork for faster transactions, seamless mobile payments and future AI-enabled shopping experiences, all while improving the customer journey at the till.

Currys operates a large physical retail estate alongside a growing digital presence, selling consumer electronics, appliances and technology services. The retailer has been investing heavily in store transformation, with initiatives such as colleague headsets and Electronic Shelf Edge Labelling already rolled out to improve operational efficiency and customer service. The introduction of Stripe’s payment technology is intended to complement these upgrades and support long-term innovation across the estate.

Stripe provides cloud-based payments and commerce infrastructure to businesses of all sizes, enabling them to accept payments, manage financial operations and build new commercial models. Through Stripe Terminal, the company allows retailers to unify online and in-store payments on a single platform, making it easier to roll out new features and respond to changing consumer behaviour. For Currys, this means a checkout system that can evolve alongside AI-assisted shopping and other emerging retail technologies.

A distinctive element of the deal is a three-way partnership between Currys, Stripe and Pennies, supported by solutions integrator Insight. In a retail first, Pennies’ charitable giving prompts will be integrated into Stripe terminals globally, enabling customers to round up purchases for good causes at the point of sale. The initiative is expected to unlock millions in additional donations by embedding generosity into everyday shopping experiences.

Beyond payments innovation, the partnership also strengthens Currys’ social impact efforts. Donations through Pennies have already supported initiatives such as providing thousands of laptops to families in need in the UK and funding service dogs for children and young adults with autism in Ireland, helping to address digital exclusion and improve access to essential services.

Currys chief information & transformation officer Andy Gamble said, “This is about building the store of the future, today. Stripe’s platform makes checkout faster, but more importantly, it gives us the flexibility to adopt innovations as they emerge. We’re already using AI to help customers find the right tech – now with Stripe’s infrastructure, and partnerships with the likes of OpenAI, we can layer in new payment capabilities that work seamlessly with AI-assisted shopping and whatever else comes next. And the fact we can also make it easier for customers to support causes they care about? That’s innovation that actually matters.”

Stripe EMEA chief revenue officer Conor McNamara said, “We’re thrilled to partner with Currys as they modernise the in-store experience across the UK and Ireland. With Stripe Terminal, Currys can adopt new types of commerce as they emerge—from AI-assisted shopping to in-person charity giving through Pennies. The integration with Pennies, which is a first for Stripe Terminals globally, demonstrates how having the right infrastructure allows innovative retailers to create delightful new customer experiences.”

Pennies CEO Alison Hutchinson CBE said, “We’re delighted to deepen our partnership with Currys through this exciting collaboration with Stripe. With Currys becoming the first retailer to enable Pennies micro-donations on Stripe terminals, this is very exciting and continues to help generosity become part of the everyday shopping experience in Currys stores, while unlocking an important new route to give for Stripe’s wider customer base through an enhanced in-store donation experience.

“Every penny truly adds up, almost 5 hours of micro-donations made by Currys customers could help the Digital Poverty Alliance pay for a laptop for a family, improving access to essential education, finance and healthcare resources. We’re so proud to continue this journey with Currys – and now with Stripe too, as we unlock even more opportunities for people to give.”
