How AI and deepfakes are reshaping identity fraud in 2026

Identity fraud is no longer a peripheral compliance concern — it is one of the most pressing financial threats facing businesses in 2026.

According to AiPrise, fraudsters are deploying artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies at unprecedented scale, rendering many traditional security measures obsolete. For businesses operating in financial services, eCommerce, healthcare, and beyond, the stakes could not be higher.

The scale of the problem is already staggering. According to the Javelin Strategy & Research Identity Fraud Study, US consumers lost $47bn to identity fraud and scams in 2024 alone, with 18 million individuals falling victim to traditional identity theft. Global losses from identity fraud exceeded $50bn in 2025, and early indicators suggest 2026 will surpass that figure.

A common misconception is that identity theft and identity fraud are interchangeable. They are not. Identity theft refers to the criminal acquisition of someone’s personal data — their name, address, National Insurance or Social Security number, or financial details. Identity fraud is the subsequent act of weaponising that stolen information to deceive businesses, open fraudulent accounts, execute unauthorised transactions, or gain illegitimate access to resources.

In 2026, this distinction matters more than ever, as fraudsters are increasingly operating across both stages simultaneously and with far greater sophistication.

There are four principal fraud typologies businesses must be aware of. New account fraud involves criminals using stolen or fabricated data to rapidly open multiple accounts across platforms, exploiting them before detection systems can respond. Account takeover fraud sees legitimate customer accounts hijacked, with credentials changed and real users locked out before unauthorised transactions are carried out. Synthetic identity fraud — arguably the most insidious — involves combining genuine data such as a valid Social Security number with fabricated names and details to construct new identities that slowly build credit over time before being exploited. Finally, first-party fraud occurs when individuals use their real identity but misrepresent financial information to obtain goods or services they never intend to repay.

The data paints a concerning picture for business leaders. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission recorded more than 1.1 million identity theft reports in 2024, with total losses surpassing $12.7bn — a 23% year-on-year increase. Experian’s UK Fraud and Financial Crime Report for 2025 revealed a sharp rise in AI-related fraud, climbing from 23% of cases in 2024 to 35% in early 2025. Fraud losses facilitated by generative AI are predicted to reach $40bn in the United States by 2027.

Nearly 60% of businesses reported increased fraud losses in 2025, and more than 70% responded by boosting their fraud prevention budgets. Yet budgets alone may not be sufficient — 80% of consumers now expect stronger online safeguards from companies they interact with.

Fraud in 2026 has shifted from high-volume, low-effort attacks to fewer, smarter, exponentially harder-to-detect attempts. Several key trends are defining this new era.

AI-assisted impersonation and deepfake fraud represent perhaps the most alarming development. The UK government has predicted 8 million deepfakes will be shared in 2025, up from just 500,000 in 2023. Deepfake usage in biometric fraud attempts surged 58%, while injection attacks rose 40% year-on-year. Fraudsters now use AI to convincingly replicate real individuals at scale, defeating traditional identity verification tools that rely on static signals. Static biometric and liveness checks increasingly struggle to distinguish real users from AI-generated identities.

Synthetic identity fraud continues to dominate, with businesses losing an estimated $20bn–$40bn globally each year. Because no real victim exists to report the fraud, detection is significantly delayed and losses grow quietly before surfacing.

Credential stuffing and automated attacks have surged alongside the expansion of password reuse and single sign-on. Fraud bots automatically test vast volumes of leaked credentials, requiring only a single successful login to gain full account access — no fake identity required.

Autonomous AI fraud agents represent a newer and particularly dangerous frontier. These self-directed systems execute identity fraud end-to-end with minimal human involvement, probing defences, testing identities, adjusting tactics, and scaling successful methods across thousands of targets simultaneously. Human-led reviews and rule-based controls cannot keep pace with machine-speed attacks.

Telemetry tampering is also on the rise. Rather than attacking security controls directly, fraudsters manipulate the behavioural and device data — device fingerprints, session consistency, typing patterns, navigation flows — that security systems rely upon to assess risk. The result is that fraud passes through automated checks undetected, with risk decisions made on corrupted signals.

Fraud does not affect every sector equally. Financial services and FinTech firms are among the most targeted, given their direct access to money, credit, and payment infrastructure. Synthetic identities are used to build credit profiles and qualify for loans before disappearing, whilst account takeover attacks disproportionately target high-balance users with access to real-time payment features.

eCommerce and marketplace platforms face rapid monetisation of stolen access, with credential stuffing driving large-scale account takeovers, payment fraud, and loyalty point theft. AI-generated buyer and seller profiles are increasingly capable of bypassing basic identity checks.

In healthcare and InsurTech, the stakes extend beyond financial loss to patient safety. Stolen identities are used to receive medical treatment, obtain prescriptions, or submit fraudulent insurance claims, all of which blend into routine workflows and evade detection for extended periods.

The financial impact of identity fraud operates across two layers. Direct losses include chargebacks, refunds, loan defaults, credit write-offs, and margin erosion through subscription and loyalty programme abuse. Indirect costs compound these figures: investigation time, customer churn, reputational damage, and increasing regulatory exposure.

Regulatory expectations have evolved significantly. Compliance in 2026 is no longer about meeting baseline reporting requirements. Regulators now expect proactive fraud prevention, real-time detection, and demonstrable controls — particularly at onboarding. Static verification flows are no longer acceptable for high-risk scenarios. Continuous behavioural monitoring, shortened incident reporting timelines, and robust data protection alignment are now standard expectations.

Effective identity fraud prevention in 2026 requires adaptability, behavioural intelligence, and continuous risk assessment. Businesses should implement risk-adaptive identity verification that escalates checks in response to live risk signals — device anomalies, session inconsistencies, identity reuse — rather than relying on documents alone.

Monitoring user behaviour throughout the account lifecycle, not just at onboarding, is essential for early detection. Organisations must also design systems capable of identifying and rate-limiting automated and non-human interaction patterns, whilst validating telemetry continuously to prevent data manipulation. Compliance documentation covering risk logic, monitoring processes, and response timelines should be maintained as a matter of course.As fraud becomes smarter, defences must evolve at the same pace or faster.
