Bank of Maldives (BML), the country’s largest bank by assets and branch network, has selected Finastra’s Essence platform as part of a programme to modernise its core banking infrastructure.
The deployment forms part of the bank’s wider digital transformation strategy, with the new platform expected to provide the technology foundation for faster product development, greater operational efficiency and enhanced digital banking services across both its conventional and Islamic banking businesses.
Finastra Essence is designed as an open core banking platform that supports automation, straight-through processing and product configurability. For Bank of Maldives, the implementation is expected to reduce product development timelines, streamline internal processes and provide relationship managers with greater flexibility to respond to changing customer requirements, while continuing to support Shariah-compliant banking products alongside conventional offerings.
According to the companies, Bank of Maldives selected Essence following an evaluation of core banking platforms, citing the platform’s functionality, open architecture, Finastra’s implementation capabilities and its approach throughout the selection process.
Core banking modernisation remains a priority across many financial institutions as banks replace ageing infrastructure with platforms capable of supporting digital channels, API connectivity and faster product innovation. Open core architectures are increasingly being adopted to improve operational agility while reducing the complexity associated with legacy systems.
Founded in 1982, Bank of Maldives serves more than 390,000 customers through its branch network, self-service banking centres, ATMs and digital channels. The bank plays a significant role in the country’s financial sector and continues to invest in digital banking, customer experience and operational modernisation.
Finastra provides banking and financial services software to institutions in more than 100 countries. Backed by Vista Equity Partners, the company offers technology spanning core banking, lending, payments and treasury, supporting financial institutions as they modernise legacy infrastructure and expand digital capabilities.
