Mastercard bets on new leaders to win Asia Pacific commerce

Mastercard

Mastercard, the global payments technology giant, has appointed Joyce Bo as executive vice president, Core Payments, Asia Pacific, completing a run of senior hires designed to bolster its regional leadership as it pushes deeper into AI-enabled commerce, commercial and B2B payments, and data-driven services.

Bo, who started on 3 August, will oversee the Core Payments business across the region, with responsibility covering consumer products, digital platforms, acceptance, payment networks including account-to-account capabilities, optimisation and digital assets.

She arrives from Ant International, where she served as general manager overseeing payment innovation and the policy centre of Alipay+, the firm’s global wallet gateway. Her background also includes close to ten years in investment banking and private equity in Hong Kong at Morgan Stanley and HSBC.

Her arrival caps a wider reshuffle. Abhinav Bhatt became general counsel, Asia Pacific, in April, returning to the region after a stint as assistant general counsel for Mastercard’s global Commercial and New Payment Flows organisation in Purchase, New York.

Dr Peter Robejsek took on the role of executive vice president, Market Development, Asia Pacific, in March, relocating from Europe where he was most recently country manager for Germany; he now steers strategic partnerships with merchants, acquirers, FinTechs, governments and regulators to drive digital transformation and financial inclusion.

Paul Monnington joined in January as division president, Australasia, running the business across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, drawing on more than 25 years in financial services, retail banking, payments and digital transformation, including executive positions at Wpay, Woolworths Group and National Australia Bank.

Mastercard has also restructured Southeast Asia into two divisions, effective 1 July, to sharpen customer focus across markets with varied economic profiles and digital maturity. Beena Pothen, previously country manager for Malaysia and Brunei, becomes division president, West Southeast Asia, covering Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Donald Ong, formerly senior vice president, Services Business Development, Asia Pacific, takes on East Southeast Asia, spanning Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The company said the mix of external recruits and internal promotions strengthens its capacity to help customers navigate a fast-changing payments landscape and seize new opportunities across the region.

Mastercard Asia Pacific president Richard Wormald said, “Across Asia Pacific, AI-enabled commerce, digital wallets, tokenization and new payment experiences are reshaping commerce in real time. The region is home to some of the world’s most advanced digital economies, alongside some of its fastest-growing, making it one of the world’s most important proving grounds for the future of commerce. That creates enormous opportunity, but it also demands leadership that can think ahead, move decisively and help customers realize the full potential of these changes.”

Wormald added, “These appointments are about getting closer to customers and helping them innovate with confidence in a rapidly evolving payments landscape. Together, these leaders bring deep experience across payments, technology, financial services and markets throughout Asia Pacific, strengthening our ability to deliver the capabilities customers and partners need today while helping them prepare for what’s next.”
