Coinbase Business brings AI agents into digital asset payments

Coinbase Business, the digital asset payments platform used by more than 5,000 companies, has expanded its payments offering to support transactions involving AI agents, alongside new USDT support and additional tools for merchants.

The AI payment functionality enables businesses to accept payments from AI agents through their existing checkout infrastructure. The feature uses x402, an open standard designed to facilitate machine-to-machine transactions, with payments settling in USDC directly into the merchant’s account.

Coinbase Business said its payment links, checkout and invoice products have processed more than 100,000 payments for organisations including AI startups, auction houses, law firms and non-profits. The company said payments settle instantly and that its fees are lower than credit card fees, while merchants using the platform do not face chargebacks.

Merchants can withdraw the USDC received through these transactions or leave the funds in their account to earn rewards. Coinbase Business has also introduced USDT support across its payment links, checkouts and invoices. USDT transactions are automatically converted into USDC for settlement, removing the need for merchants to manage the two stablecoins separately.

The platform has also expanded its payment link functionality. Merchants can now create reusable links that can be distributed through channels including email, text and QR codes. Businesses can control how many times a link can be used, as well as pause or deactivate it when required.

Another new feature allows merchants to set flexible payment amounts. Businesses can establish minimum or maximum amounts, or allow customers to choose their own payment within the parameters set by the merchant. Coinbase Business said the functionality can be used for transactions such as donations, tips and services where the final amount may vary.

The payments platform has also introduced a product catalogue, enabling merchants to create product information once and reuse it across payment links, checkouts and invoices. Buyer information, including names, email addresses and shipping details, can now also be collected during checkout to support fulfilment.

The expansion comes as Coinbase Business extends its payment infrastructure beyond conventional digital asset transactions, adding support for AI-driven payments alongside tools designed to give merchants greater control over how they collect and manage payments.
