Mastercard, Backbase team up to accelerate AI-native banking

Mastercard, Backbase push banks towards AI-native transformation

Mastercard, the global payments and technology company, and Backbase, the provider of an AI-native Banking Operating System, have partnered to help financial institutions move AI initiatives beyond experimentation and into production.

The collaboration will give banks using Backbase’s platform access to Mastercard capabilities spanning personalisation, analytics, customer engagement and cyber resilience. These tools will sit alongside Backbase’s Banking OS, giving financial institutions access to a broader set of capabilities as they develop their digital operations.

Mastercard’s Dynamic Yield will support personalisation and customer engagement across digital banking channels, while Test & Learn will help banks assess the impact of changes to products, pricing and campaigns.

The partnership will also provide access to Mastercard’s SpendingPulse, which offers macroeconomic and sector-level spending data, and Cyber Quant, which supports organisations in assessing cyber risk and resilience.

The companies position the collaboration against a wider move towards agentic AI, where automated systems can take actions on behalf of customers within defined parameters. Mastercard has pointed to an Agent Pay transaction conducted in the UAE in late 2025 as an example of this development.

Mastercard has also launched Mastercard Agent Suite, which is designed to help enterprises develop secure AI-powered experiences across payments.

Mastercard operates in more than 200 countries and territories, providing payment technology and working with individuals, businesses and public-sector organisations. Backbase was founded in 2003 by Jouk Pleiter and provides a Banking OS designed to connect customer, employee and AI agent activity across digital channels and back-office operations. The company serves more than 120 banks across retail, SMB, commercial, private banking and wealth management.

Backbase VP Collaborations and Alliances Ricardo Ribelles said, “By deepening our collaboration with Mastercard, we’re accelerating our ability to help banks worldwide harness the full potential of AI. This collaboration goes beyond technology integration – it brings together two ecosystems that, combined, give banks a faster, more trusted path from AI experimentation to real business outcomes. Together, we are helping financial institutions access capabilities that support more personalized customer engagement, stronger decision-making and greater operational resilience.”

Mastercard executive vice president, services, EEMEA Selin Bahadirli added, “Banks are moving from AI experimentation to AI execution and the infrastructure underneath that shift matters enormously. Through this collaboration, financial institutions can access Mastercard capabilities that support personalization, analytics, cyber resilience, and customer engagement as they advance their digital transformation journeys. This is how agentic banking moves from proof of concept to production.”
