Mind the gap: LSEG links market data to trade execution

According to LSEG Data & Analytics, one of the most persistent inefficiencies in trading is also one of the least visible: the moment a trader finishes analysing the market and must switch to an entirely different system to act on that analysis. It is a handover so routine, LSEG Data & Analytics notes, that many desks have stopped recognising it as a choice at all.

LSEG Data & Analytics explains that this separation is a product of history rather than design. Market data desktops were built to deliver information, depth and context, while execution systems were built purely for order handling, routing and broker connectivity. The two evolved along entirely different tracks, serving different buyers and solving different problems, meaning few firms have ever combined a strong data foundation, credible execution capability and genuine market connectivity within a single environment.

LSEG Data & Analytics argues that AI is now changing the economics of that divide. Rather than making trading decisions, AI is compressing the research layer, filtering vast volumes of filings, broker research, options positioning and macro data into synthesised insight within minutes rather than hours.

As that analytical stage shrinks, the manual handover to a separate execution system becomes a proportionally larger share of the time between insight and order, LSEG Data & Analytics says, while the trader’s remaining value concentrates into judgement, the part of the job most vulnerable to disruption.

LSEG Data & Analytics states that few organisations hold every piece needed to solve this problem, having spent decades separately building the data, desktop, execution and connectivity layers required. LSEG says it now owns all of them: a data foundation spanning roughly 80m instruments, a desktop workflow refined over years of client development, execution capability through LSEG TORA now folded into REDI on Workspace, and connectivity to around 1,000 brokers via LSEG Autex Trade Route, increasingly unified by AI.

In practice, LSEG Data & Analytics says this means a trader monitoring securities through Monitor or Pulse can move directly from spotting an opportunity to order entry and execution monitoring within REDI on Workspace, without breaking context. Blended order book depth, intraday volume analytics, Autex IOIs and block trade monitoring all feed directly into execution decisions, while options and macro context, previously prone to being lost or miskeyed when rebuilt in a separate system, remain intact throughout.

LSEG Data & Analytics maintains that none of this changes what makes a good trading decision, but it does change the distance between deciding and doing, narrowing a gap that has quietly shaped trading desks for decades.
