Thredd and Velocity bring stablecoins to card issuers

Thredd, an AI-first issuer processing platform, has partnered with stablecoin treasury and settlement provider Velocity to add stablecoin-based money movement to its payments offering for card issuers and programme managers.

The new functionality will allow Thredd clients to move between fiat currencies and supported stablecoins, transfer value on-chain or through linked fiat rails, and use stablecoins to fund accounts, make payouts and complete settlement. The initial focus will be on B2B and B2B2B use cases, including stablecoin-backed card programmes, international payouts, global treasury operations and blockchain-based settlement.

Velocity will provide the infrastructure supporting the service, including programmable wallets, connections to blockchain networks and banking systems, liquidity and conversion services, and an orchestration layer for transfers and settlement.

For international card programmes, the use of stablecoin rails could reduce the need for issuers to hold capital across multiple markets and potentially lower prefunding and collateral requirements. Funds could also move across currencies and borders without relying solely on correspondent banking networks, while clients would not need to develop their own on-chain workflows.

Thredd will combine Velocity’s stablecoin infrastructure with its existing ledger, APIs, issuer processing, card controls, fraud and risk tools, reconciliation and operational support. The companies said this will give clients a single commercial and technical access point for holding, moving and spending value.

Thredd provides debit, credit, digital wallet and ledger services through a single API to more than 100 FinTech firms, digital banks and embedded finance providers across more than 50 countries. The company processes billions of transactions each year.

Velocity describes itself as a stablecoin payments and treasury platform for global CFOs and treasurers. Its backers include Visa, Capital One, Circle, Dragonfly and FirstMark Capital.

The service is being developed as a global proposition but will launch commercially on a market-by-market basis, subject to regulatory, partner and product readiness.

Thredd CEO Jim McCarthy said, “Stablecoins are rapidly becoming an important part of global payments infrastructure, but clients should not have to rebuild their payments stack to take advantage of them. By bringing stablecoin money movement into the Thredd platform, we can connect the issuing and processing capabilities our clients already rely on with new ways to move, convert and settle funds. It’s about giving clients more flexibility while maintaining the controls, reliability and operational support they expect from Thredd.”

Velocity CEO and founder Eric Queathem added, “The real opportunity with stablecoins isn’t a new asset, it’s a more programmable way for businesses to move and manage money globally. Thredd’s platform is already trusted by some of the most sophisticated card programmes in the market, and this partnership gives those clients a practical way to use stablecoin rails inside an environment they already know. That’s where stablecoins get powerful: not as a separate crypto product, but as infrastructure embedded in the systems businesses already use.”
