Mastercard and BMO pull payments inside enterprise software

BMO, the Canadian bank, has teamed up with Mastercard, the global payments network, to let eligible Corporate Card clients run virtual card payments from inside the business software they already use. The launch makes BMO the first Mastercard issuer in Canada to provide this type of embedded payment experience.

The capability covers enterprise resource planning (ERP), procurement, accounts payable and travel management systems. Clients in both Canada and the United States can now settle supplier invoices, travel bookings and corporate expenses without switching to a separate banking portal. The integration runs on Mastercard’s Commercial Express framework, which gives participating software platforms a common method for enabling issuer-backed virtual card payments.

The partners are targeting a long-standing problem. Corporate payment processes have tended to be split across several systems, forcing finance teams to rely on manual steps, standalone banking portals and separate operational arrangements. Moving payment execution into existing tools is designed to remove those breaks in the process.

The model brings benefits to corporate buyers, B2B software providers and card issuers. Treasury, procurement and accounts payable leaders can initiate, approve and reconcile virtual card transactions within the interfaces they already use, speeding up invoice settlement and simplifying operations. The standardised framework also reduces the effort needed to connect platforms with issuers, allowing quicker rollout across the ecosystem. In addition, embedded virtual cards give businesses tighter control over spending limits, automated reconciliation data and better use of working capital.

BMO provides corporate card and commercial payment services to business clients across North America, while Mastercard operates the card network and the Commercial Express framework underpinning the integration.

The service is open to eligible BMO Corporate Card clients in Canada and the United States through participating enterprise software platforms.

BMO head of TPS product management and payments modernisation Seth Blacher said, “As our Corporate Card clients digitise their operations, they expect us to integrate seamlessly into their existing workflows. This partnership with Mastercard lets us deliver exactly that by removing the friction between finance software and payment execution, creating a more streamlined payment experience.”

Mastercard Canada senior vice president, financial institutions partnerships Diane Miquelon added, “As businesses digitise their operations, payments must move seamlessly alongside day-to-day business activities. By embedding Mastercard’s virtual card capabilities directly into the platforms where treasury and finance teams operate, we are removing friction, enhancing payment security and helping organisations optimise working capital management with greater control and predictability.”
