The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has teamed up with TerraPay, a worldwide digital money transfer specialist, in a move designed to widen the bank’s overseas payout options and sharpen the cross-border experience it offers clients.
Under the agreement, NBB will tap into TerraPay’s digital rails to push its international footprint further, streamline how it handles overseas disbursements and open up a larger selection of destinations for customer payments.
At the heart of the arrangement is TerraPay’s capacity to accept Swift ISO 20022 messages and settle cross-border transfers instantly and securely. Customers also gain full visibility over each transaction, with the original sum arriving intact and free of deductions.
The model rests on TerraPay’s Swift connectivity, which lets banks reuse the Swift systems and RMA key exchange arrangements they already operate to reach TerraPay’s worldwide web of bank accounts, digital wallets and domestic payment schemes. Rather than wiring up each market one at a time, lenders can sidestep much of that integration burden and move into fresh markets and payout corridors far more quickly.
Working alongside Swift, TerraPay frees institutions such as NBB to focus on what they do best: managing client relationships, providing banking products and building an ever more digital service.
NBB brings to the tie-up its long-standing banking infrastructure, its customer base and its knowledge of the regional market. TerraPay contributes a far-reaching digital payout network that spans the globe.
Together, the pair intend to link conventional banking with newer payment ecosystems, paving the way for cross-border money movement that is easier to access, more efficient and better connected.
NBB group head of transaction banking Vineet Munot said, “International connectivity is becoming increasingly important to how our customers operate, and our role is to ensure that NBB’s transaction banking expertise continues to serve those needs with speed and reliability. This collaboration is a strategic step forward in scaling our payments proposition through infrastructure that can improve the cross-border transaction experience.
“Through TerraPay, we see an opportunity to connect our customers in Bahrain and the region with a wider range of payment destinations, supporting their growth as their requirements become more global.”
TerraPay co-founder and chief business officer Ani Sane said, “Banks want to extend their international payment reach without having to build and maintain separate connections into every market, wallet and local payment system. That is exactly the problem TerraPay solves. By combining TerraPay’s global payout network with Swift connectivity, NBB can use its existing banking infrastructure to access more than 12 billion bank accounts, digital wallets and local payment systems through a single global network.
“This partnership gives NBB a faster and more scalable way to expand into new corridors, broaden customer choice and improve the cross-border payment experience, while allowing the bank to retain control of the customer relationship and its core banking infrastructure. NBB is a strong example of how leading banks are choosing TerraPay to extend traditional correspondent banking into the rapidly growing world of instant payments and digital wallets.”
