Visa, a leading global digital payments company, has announced a partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to broaden access to secure and inclusive digital government systems, especially within emerging markets.

The partnership is driven by a shared goal of promoting economic growth and social inclusion through foundational digital government systems that enable citizens and businesses to access services safely and conveniently.

Visa and USAID’s five-year collaboration will focus on programmes that support governments in developing and deploying digital government platforms, facilitating connections between citizens and local government services to foster economic growth.

This move builds on Visa and USAID’s established track record of collaborating to advance financial inclusion and digital development.

A recent example is their work in Ukraine, where Visa and USAID supported the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s development of Diia, a mobile application that connects millions of Ukrainians with a range of government services.

Additionally, Visa Foundation and USAID were founding members of the Climate Gender Equity Fund (CGEF), part of the Women in the Sustainable Economy (WISE) Initiative, which focuses on empowering small, climate-smart businesses with gender-equitable investments.

“Digital government systems can help enhance transparency and efficiency between communities and governments, fostering a more favourable environment for entrepreneurs and economic development,” said Chris Newkirk, Global Head of New Flows – Commercial & Money Movement Solutions at Visa. “Through shared interests and goals, Visa and USAID will empower communities with digital and financial literacy and support access to digital systems that will help drive financial inclusion for everyone, everywhere.”

Christopher Burns, USAID’s Chief Digital Development Officer and Director of USAID’s Technology Division, said, “Digital development works best when governments and the private sector intentionally work together toward a shared vision of an inclusive digital future. We look forward to deepening our partnership with Visa, as we jointly work to drive digital financial inclusion for traditionally underserved consumers and strengthen digital public infrastructure across emerging markets.”

With this partnership, Visa and USAID are committed to advancing economic opportunities, bridging the gender digital divide, and fostering financial inclusion across developing markets.
