Rokt acquires Canal to boost ecommerce revenue streams

Rokt has announced the acquisition of Canal, a distributed commerce platform that connects retailers with curated third-party product inventory.

The acquisition aims to expand Rokt’s ecommerce offering and help clients unlock new revenue streams. While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the move positions Rokt to significantly strengthen its catalogue of ecommerce solutions, particularly through the launch of its new product, Rokt Catalog.

Rokt enables ecommerce companies to deliver personalised and contextually relevant experiences during the transaction moment. Its suite of products—including Pay+, Aftersell, and Thanks—uses machine learning and artificial intelligence through its proprietary Rokt Brain engine. Canal, on the other hand, was founded in 2020 and provides the infrastructure that enables brands to sell curated third-party products without managing inventory or logistics. Its network comprises over 1,900 retailers and direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands, including Macy’s, SHEIN, Anine Bing, and Uncommon Goods.

With this acquisition, Rokt will integrate Canal’s curated catalog of third-party products into its ecommerce solutions, allowing brands to showcase relevant offers during online transactions. This expanded offering enables merchants to grow their product range without the operational burden of managing fulfilment, thereby enhancing both revenue and consumer experience.

Canal’s co-founders—Bennett Carroccio, Clay Schubiner, and Liam Kinney—will remain with the company and join Rokt’s product leadership team. Their combined expertise in AI, scalable commerce, and retail integrations will play a pivotal role in developing the Rokt Catalog.

The acquisition follows a period of strong growth for Rokt. In 2024, the company increased its revenue by over 40% year over year, reaching $600m. Alongside the Canal deal, Rokt has also recently acquired mParticle and Aftersell, further bolstering its commerce ecosystem. Looking ahead, Rokt anticipates powering over 7.5bn ecommerce transactions in 2025.

Rokt CEO Bruce Buchanan said, “This acquisition not only expands our products and the Rokt Network, it redefines the advantage we provide to our ecommerce partners. By integrating Canal’s catalog with our AI-powered Rokt Brain, we’re unlocking a new level of relevancy that makes the shopping experience better for every consumer.”

Canal CEO and co-founder Bennett Carroccio said, “Canal’s mission has always been to empower brands to sell anything, anywhere, by building the #1 platform for curated products. Joining forces with Rokt allows us to build on that mission and redefine how retailers approach the customer experience. We couldn’t be more excited to bring Rokt’s technology to Canal’s partners and work together to create the future of distributed commerce.”
