Klarna, the global digital bank and flexible payments provider, has switched on Call Status Detection across the Nordics, giving customers a straightforward way to confirm whether a call claiming to be from Klarna is genuine.
The tool works through the Klarna app: when a customer receives a call from someone saying they represent Klarna, they can open the app and check a banner at the top of the screen. A green banner confirms the call is verified and safe to continue, while an amber banner signals that Klarna cannot verify the call, prompting the customer to end it.
The launch extends Klarna’s wider fraud-prevention toolkit, sitting alongside the existing Klarna Inbox, which already lets customers verify written communications such as emails, texts and letters. Together, the two features are designed to make it harder for fraudsters to convincingly pose as Klarna representatives.
Impersonation scams targeting banks and payment providers have become an increasingly common threat, partly because caller ID can be manipulated with relative ease. According to the European Central Bank, fraudsters steal more than €4bn from consumers across Europe each year.
Klarna operates as a digital bank and payments provider, though the press release does not detail further specifics of its wider operations beyond the anti-fraud measures described here.
Call Status Detection is now live by default for iOS users in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, with additional regions planned. Android users currently need to switch the feature on manually within their Klarna app settings.
Klarna Head of Financial Crime Woody Malouf said, “Scammers are getting more sophisticated and we want to do everything we can to help consumers fight back.” He added, “Adding Call Status Detection to our existing Inbox feature gives consumers an easy and quick way to verify what’s real and keep their money safe.”
