Sequoia Capital sets sights on six new funds spanning US, China, India

Global venture capital firm Sequoia Capital is looking to launch six new venture and growth investment funds, focusing on the US, China, and India.

The funds are: Sequoia Capital U.S. Venture Fund XVI Sequoia Capital, U.S. Growth Fund VIII, Sequoia Capital China Venture Fund VII, Sequoia Capital China Growth Fund V, Sequoia Capital China Seed Fund I and Sequoia Capital India VI.

None of the funds are yet to register any capital, and do not outline any target or goal, according to the latest US Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Earlier in the year, it was reported that the firm was looking to raise $8bn for its next global fund. Sequoia is looking towards Chinese investors, including state-backed one, to support this huge fund. It’s previous global fund closed in 2016, on $2bn.

Investment strategies for the funds have not been outlined; however, Sequoia invests across a variety of different sectors. Some of its areas of focus include FinTech, financial services, healthcare, gaming, media, security, data and analytics, marketing and infrastructure.

The firm is very active in the FinTech space and has already completed 10 deals in the space across its US, China and India investment arms.

Earlier in the month, Sequoia China invested alongside GIC, deploying $40m into South Korean financial services app Toss. Another notable investment from the firm’s China arm, was a contribution to the $10bn funding of Ant Financial, the payments affiliate of Alibaba Group.

Some of the other investments completed by the firm this year include commitments to the $11.5m round of life insurance platform Ethos, the $15m funding of cybersecurity company SafeBreach and the $25m Series B of P2P lending platform Funding Societies.
