Zego to provide insurance to Uber car rental platform Splend

Zego will be providing Splend, which offers car hire for Uber drivers, with an insurance policy for its UK fleet.

The cover will be pay-per-mile and will provide Splend with a simple way of adding additional cars to the policy, Zego claims.

Alongside the insurance, Zego will give Splend greater visibility into the behaviour of its drivers via analysis of telematics data generated by black boxes inside the cars. With this, Splend will be able to improve decision-making when allocating its vehicles and lowering the risk of accidents.

Splend, which was founded in Australia, provides uber drivers with access to eco-friendly and affordable cars. The company handles all financing, insurance and maintenance for the driver. Consumers can either rent the car or take out a rent-to-buy scheme.

The company recently relocated its headquarters to London and currently supports 90,000 Uber drivers.

Zego CEO and co-founder of Sten Saar, said: “In a short space of time, Splend has become one of the leading forces in the new mobility sector and the company’s trajectory and ambitions very much mirror our own. Both Zego and Splend are committed to using data to modernise the way that fleets of cars operate and to reduce risk and this is just the beginning of a partnership which we hope will see us work in unison around the world.”

Founded in 2016, Zego offers flexible insurance policies for the gig economy workers, supplying self-employed and private hire drivers with accessible and cost-effective coverage. Policies cover scooters, cars, bikes, vans and others.

The company recently completed a similar partnership with e-scooter company Dott. The deal sees Zego insure Splend’s fleet of scooters across Belgium and France.
